Jewels in the South Pacific: A view of Fiji from the air.

The stunningly diverse landscape below me was hard to comprehend, a heady swirl of a million shades of blues and greens and browns, it was at times hard to tell where the horizon was, where the sea ended and where the sky began. The doors of the chopper were wide open, and the wind was lashing against my face. The sun was still quite low in the sky, casting shadows on the landscape, the perfectly blue sea offered up its treasure trove - a million sparkling diamonds on the surface. Clichéd, but truly this was Paradise.

This week’s Modern Art Notes Podcast features artist Larry Bell, who joins me to discuss his career as one of the foremost sculptors of the post-war period. Bell, 72, was a key pivot between hard-edge painting, light-and-space, and minimalism, which Bell anticipated in his sculpture of the late 1950s. Bell’s work is in the collection of virtually every major museum of modern and contemporary art.

Yes, this is a periodic table of the New Deal.

On June 16, 1933, the period known as FDR’s First 100 Days came to an end. During this time Roosevelt had issued proclamations and executive orders and pushed a steady stream of legislation through Congress to relieve economic hardship, stimulate recovery, and forge reforms.

As FDR put it, “The country needs and… the country demands bold, persistent experimentation. It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something.”

To help navigate the myriad programs, players and events surrounding the New Deal, the FDR Library’s Education Chemist, er, we mean, Education Specialist has devised a Periodic Table of the New Deal. The table includes definitions and descriptions of the many programs and so-called alphabet agencies created during the New Deal. To get the full features of this interactive guide we recommend exploring it here.

Na początek, wprowadziliśmy sporą aktualizację w postaci Wiadomości (dotychczasowe Pytania i Zgłaszane posty), która jest dostępna już od dzisiaj:

Zbiorcza skrzynka wiadomości. Nowa skrzynka odbiorcza oszczędza kłopotu ze sprawdzaniem przychodzących wiadomości osobno w każdym posiadanym przez Was blogu. Ponadto, ikona Wiadomości pokazuje liczbę nieprzeczytanych wiadomości otrzymanych przez wszystkie Wasze blogi! Nową skrzynkę odbiorczą można wyłączyć na stronie Preferencje.

Usuwanie wszystkich wiadomości. Po udzieleniu odpowiedzi lub zaakceptowaniu wybranych propozycji postów można teraz usunąć wszystkie pozostałe wiadomości dwoma kliknięciami.

Odpowiedzi prywatne. Aby odpowiedzieć na czyjeś pytanie bez publikowania go w swoim blogu, można teraz wysłać prywatną odpowiedź bezpośrednio do pytającego.

Uwaga: Funkcje te nie będą widoczne, jeśli nie masz włączonych opcji Zapytaj i Zgłaszanie postów w co najmniej jednym ze swoich blogów.

Enter Staircar: a lightweight HTTP service to make interacting with hundreds of Redis instances look easy. We considered some nascent open source projects for the job, but found they had a lot of functionality we didn’t need, and/or struggled with response times once the number of elements in the sorted set started to grow. Thus, we ended up with our own libevent-based interface in C, which presents itself as a RESTful, JSON-speaking service.

Extensive benchmarking showed Staircar was able to handle roughly 30,000 requests a second per server.

Great stuff. Can’t wait to see some code.

Tumblr is now testing “Pages”:

You can now add static pages to your blog, with a few very useful options. Head to your blog’s Customize page and click the “Pages” menu to get started. There are currently three types of Pages you can create:

Standard Layout. Create a simple page with a title and body using your current theme.

Custom Layout. Create a page with a completely separate layout.

Redirect. Forward a route to a page on another domain. Useful for maintaining links when moving your domain name over to Tumblr.

Developers: Check out the Theme Docs for instructions on implementing the new {block:Pages} tag.

Once again, Tumblr’s brought the platform to a whole new level. Can’t wait to test it out.

Yesterday, Amit Gupta had a great suggestion to include thumbnails on Video posts in the Dashboard:

I love Tumblr, but I almost never watch the videos people post. But I click on photos to see the bigger version all the time.

Video posts could really use a still frame to give you a peek at what’s inside.

Anyone else feel this way?

We were already doing this with videos uploaded to Tumblr. Now we’ll also show thumbnails next to YouTube videos.

Some picture I took of postal carrier’s bike in Copenhagen earlier this year. The postal worker’s uniforms are fancy, and a nice burnt orange color. But, check out their sweet bike set up!
